Dental Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays can be used to restore teeth suffering from mild or moderate tooth decay or damage. Depending on the extent of the damage, a full crown may not be necessary for repair.  Inlays and onlays can be created with a few different materials. Most commonly, porcelain, composite resin, and gold are used.
Unlike standard fillings, inlay and onlay procedures require two visits. The necessary appliance is custom made in a dental laboratory, not in the office.
What is the Difference Between Inlays & Onlays?
Inlays: During a dental inlay procedure, the material is only bonded to the center of the inflicted tooth.
Onlays: A dental onlay can extend further than an inlay. This material may be bonded to a single tooth cusp or multiple.
What are the Benefits?
- Appearance: Dental inlays and onlays provide patients with a natural-looking restoration. Compared to the use of metal fillings, they are unnoticeable and seemingly invisible.
- Comfort: Unlike metal fillings, this restoration will not contact or expand due to changes in temperature.
Long lasting: When properly cared for, inlays and onlays can last a patient close to thirty years. This lifespan is longer than standard fillings.
- Tooth structure preservation: During these procedures, a minimal amount of the tooth’s surface is removed. Majority of healthy tooth structure can be preserved while repairing the damaged areas.
What to Expect
During your first of two dental appointments, your Chicago Heights, IL dentist will need to either scan or retrieve an impression of the damaged tooth. This impression or scan will then be sent to a dental lab to create your custom permanent inlay or onlay. A temporary appliance will be fitted at the end of your visit to protect your teeth while the permeant one is being created. Once our dental office receives your material from the lab, you will be fitted with the permanent replacement.
