Chicago Heights, IL Dentist Helps Patients Get Rid of Canker Sores

Have you ever bitten down on your cheek instead of your food? This often creates an irritating and painful canker sore that can lead to plenty of pain.

Once you create a canker sore, it’s difficult to make it go away, especially if you continue to bite on it while eating. It’s important to understand that not all canker sores start this way. No matter what caused your sore, there are ways to get rid of it.

Canker Sore Symptoms

Many canker sores appear on your cheeks, tongue or the inside of your lips. They are normally just a nuisance and not something to be concerned with. Most often, they are caused by trauma, like biting down while eating or stress. They can also be produced by the types of food you are eating.

Relieve Canker Sore Pain

It’s essential that you don’t aggravate your canker sore. To do that, follow these simple steps.
Don’t hit the sore with your toothbrush while cleaning your teeth.
Avoid any foods that make the pain worse. This might include crunchy, acidic or dry foods.
Apply wax if you wear braces. You’ll want to put this anywhere that the canker sore comes in contact with your braces. If they continue to cause discomfort, you might need to have the dentist adjust your braces to make the issue better.
Use a salt water rinse and swish it in your mouth for about 30 seconds at a time. You can do this several times a day to relieve pain and keep the area clean.
Local numbing agents are also helpful sometimes. They contain benzocaine which only offers temporary relief. Just be sure that you read all the directions and precautions before you use it.
Take some type of over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Most times you won’t need further treatment; the canker sore should disappear on its own. If it doesn’t begin healing in a couple of weeks, make an appointment to see your Chicago Hdentist for a checkup. If it’s too painful to eat or drink with, you might consider making an appointment even sooner.
