Instead of covering just a portion of the tooth, like a filling, a crown (or cap) can encase an entire portion of the visible tooth. The crown acts as a new outer surface for a tooth that is broken or decayed beyond the extent of where a filling could be used. The crown is able to provide a protective shell around the damaged or decayed tooth to strengthen it, as well as to improve the appearance of the tooth. Crowns can also help restore the shape of a tooth to its natural state if it has been broken. The porcelain mixture they are composed of gives them a natural tooth look and feel.
How it's done:
Typically two visits to our Chicago Heights office will be needed to place your crown. At the first visit, we will reshape the tooth or remove a portion in order for the crown to fit properly. Following this, an impression or scan of the tooth will be taken and sent to our dental lab to create the permanent appliance. A temporary crown will be placed at this point to protect your tooth until your next visit.
When you return to our office, we will have received the permanent crown from the laboratory. The temporary will be removed and the permanent crown put into place. Before cementing the permanent crown in place, he will ensure that it fits comfortably and matches the color of your teeth.
