Dental Exams and X-Rays
Following one of your twice-yearly dental cleanings, you should be seen by one of our A Lasting Smile Chicago Heights dentists for a dental exam. Routine exams help in identifying and planning treatment for any issues you may, or may not realize, that you have so that we can be proactive. This allows for treatment to be most effective and efficient, also saving you money down the line as well.
How it's done:
First Dr. Stanford will go about inspecting your mouth visually, utilizing specialized dental tools, mirrors, and lighting. He will look for decayed or cracked teeth, as well as review other important items, such as:
- Medical history: Assess how any new medical conditions or illnesses may affect your dental health.
- Oral cancer screening: The face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums will be checked for any signs of oral cancer.
- Gum disease evaluation: Your gums and bone around the teeth will be checked for any evidence of periodontal disease.
- Examination of existing restorations: Current fillings, crowns, and other restorations are made sure to be in good order.
Lastly, diagnostic x-rays will be taken to reveal any problems that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as issues below the gumline. Bitewing x-rays are usually taken once every year while whole-head-revolving panographic x-rays are typically recommended every 3-5 years.
