Amalgam fillings, also known as silver-colored fillings, are made from a combination of metals such as tin, copper, silver and mercury. These combined metals allow for the amalgam to be very durable and strong as a filling in the teeth. They can last well over 10 years on average, and due to their strength and color, are very helpful in back teeth (such as molars) where most chewing occurs.
How it’s done:
As in all filling procedures, first the decayed portion of the tooth is removed. The tooth will then be shaped in such a way that it can accept the filling, following by the actual placement of the amalgam into the void. A band may be placed around the tooth at this point to allow the amalgam to condense. Finally the filling will be adjusted and polished to fit your bite most comfortably.
It is not unusual to have heightened sensitivity to hot or cold after placement of an amalgam filling. Additionally, amalgam fillings do not harden instantly, so chewing for a few hours following placement is recommended.
